More info
What is baking powder?
Otherwise known as baking powder, it's a mixture of a basic agent (sodium bicarbonate) and an acidic agent (tartic acid, sodium pyrophosphate). This is not the case here, but starch can sometimes be found in the ingredients, where it acts as a stabiliser.
Baking powder works by producing an acid-base chemical reaction once the preparation has been moistened. The acid will react with the sodium bicarbonate, releasing carbon dioxide (which will make the dough rise). All that's left is to bake the dough straight away!
Baking powder is often used in pastry-making for recipes such as cakes and muffins.
